Looking for creative ways to give cash as a gift? This chocolate box money gift is the perfect solution! Simply swap out the chocolates for folded dollar bills, add some fun printable signs, and you’ve got a money gift idea that’s both sweet and practical. Because sometimes the best present is a choco-LOT of cash!

Let’s be real – finding the perfect gift for some people is basically impossible. Your teenage niece? She wants cash. Your college student heading back to school? Cash. Your friend’s graduation? You guessed it – cash.
But handing someone an envelope full of money feels a little… boring. Where’s the fun in that? Where’s the surprise? Where’s the moment when they open it and actually smile instead of just politely saying thanks?
That’s exactly why I came up with this chocolate box money gift idea! It looks like you’re giving them a fancy box of chocolates, but when they open it up, they discover folded bills tucked into each little compartment. The reaction is priceless every single time.
Plus, with my printable “Choco-LOT of Cash” signs, you can make this gift look polished and put-together without spending hours on it. Trust me, this is one of those gift ideas that looks way more impressive than the effort it actually takes! And check out my pizza box money gift for another fun cash gift idea!

What is a Chocolate Box Money Gift?
A chocolate box money gift is exactly what it sounds like – a box of chocolates with the chocolates replaced by folded dollar bills! You simply remove the chocolates from their little compartments, fold up bills to fit in the spaces, and decorate the box with fun signs.
The best part? You can customize this gift to any occasion and any budget. Use ones for a fun little gift, fives or tens for something more generous, or even twenties if you’re feeling extra fancy!
This creative cash gift works perfectly for:
- Graduations – High school or college grads always need money for their next chapter, and this makes it so much more fun than a card with cash tucked inside.
- Birthdays – Especially for those hard-to-shop-for teens and tweens who don’t want toys but aren’t quite old enough for “adult” gifts yet.
- Christmas or Holiday Gifts – When you have no idea what to get someone, cash is always appreciated. But presenting it in a chocolate box? Now that’s memorable.
- Thank You Gifts – Show your appreciation to a teacher, babysitter, or helpful neighbor with a sweet surprise that’s also practical.
- Bridal or Baby Shower Gifts – Sometimes the bride or new mom just needs some extra cash for all those expenses, and this makes it feel more special than just a check.

Supplies Needed
Here’s everything you’ll need to create your own chocolate box money gift:
- Box of chocolates – Look for the kind with individual plastic compartments that hold each chocolate piece. My printables are perfectly sized for the standard rectangular Russell Stover boxes.
- Cash – Dollar bills, fives, tens, or twenties – whatever fits your budget! I usually use a mix to make it more interesting.
- Printable templates – Signs that say “Choco-LOT of Cash” for the top and inside of the box. You can grab my printables below!
- White card stock – This is key! Regular printer paper is too flimsy and see-through. Card stock makes your signs look professional and durable.
- Scissors or paper trimmer – For cutting out your printed signs.
- Tape – To attach the signs to the chocolate box.
- Optional supplies – Confetti or other fun items to include in the box.
Step by Step Instructions
Creating this chocolate box money gift is incredibly simple! Just follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Print and Cut Out the Templates
Print your “Choco-LOT of Cash” signs on white card stock. I always recommend card stock over regular paper because it’s thicker, more durable, and less transparent, so you can’t see the tape or the box design through it.

Use scissors or a paper trimmer to carefully cut out each sign along the solid lines. Take your time to make the edges as clean and straight as possible – it makes the finished product look so much nicer!
Step 2: Remove the Chocolates from the Box
Here comes the fun part – eating all the chocolates! Just kidding (but also, not kidding). Remove all the chocolates from the box and set them aside for snacking later. You’ll want to keep the plastic insert with all the little compartments intact.
Make sure to save the little paper or plastic cups that hold each chocolate if your box has them – they help keep the folded bills in place!

Step 3: Fold the Dollar Bills
This step is key to making your gift look neat and tidy. Fold each bill into a small square or rectangle that’s about the same size as the chocolate compartments. The exact folding method will depend on the size of your box, but generally:
- Fold the bill in half lengthwise
- Then fold it in half again
- Keep folding until it’s small enough to fit nicely in the compartment
You can experiment with a few different folding techniques to see what works best for your specific box!

Step 4: Place the Folded Money in the Box
Tuck each folded bill into the compartments where the chocolates used to be. Try to arrange them so they look neat and uniform. If your box had those little paper or plastic cups, place the folded bills inside them so they stay put and look more polished.
*TIP – Use Wall-Safe tape or painter’s tape to attach the folded bills to the individual slots. That way, the cash stays put. I didn’t do this the first time I made one of these money chocolate box gifts, and when the recipient opened it, the dollar bills were just scattered in the bottom of the box.
Step 5: Tape the Signs to the Box
Use a glue stick or small pieces of tape to attach your printed signs to the chocolate box. Place one sign on the top of the box and another on the inside lid so they see the message as soon as they open it.
Make sure your signs are centered and pressed down firmly so they don’t peel off when someone opens the box!

Tips for the Best Money Chocolate Box Gift
- Mix up your denominations – Using a combination of ones, fives, and tens makes the gift feel more substantial and exciting. You can also add some one dollar coins or half-dollar coins to mix it up.
- Add a bow or ribbon – Tie a pretty ribbon around the box to make it look extra special and gift-ready.
- Look up fun folding techniques on YouTube – Want to get super creative? You can find origami-style tutorials on YouTube for fun dollar bill folding ideas!
