Every child’s school year is filled with “firsts,” from the traditional first day of school photos to first school sports and beyond. Each turn around the sun is filled with so many memories you want to hold onto and cherish.
And as much as I love to celebrate the “firsts,” I also think that the “lasts” deserve some air time as well. With each final day of the school year, both students and parents like to take a pause and celebrate that we’ve all made it through.
That’s why, at the request of one of my amazing readers, I’ve created these last day of school signs to help you celebrate another academic year well done. They’re a super low-prep way to capture that final day of each grade and preserve those precious moments in time.

Tips for Using the Last Day of School Sign
If you’re making an effort to print out signs for the last day of school, you naturally want your pictures to turn out well. To avoid any photo faux pas, check out these tips for using the free printable last day of school signs. After all, this day only comes around once a year!
- Take a repeat photo. Your child’s last day of school photo is an excellent way to show how they’ve grown over the year, and these changes are most noticeable when you have them posing in the same location as their first day of school photos. Take at least one photo where they’re standing in the same way, whether it’s on the front steps, in front of the door, etc.
- Add some action. Kids are notorious for taking really awkward photos, whether it’s with that weirdly robotic smile they save especially for these moments, or the “I can’t believe you’re making me do this again” pre-teen look. If your child needs to loosen up, have them run in place, do a few jumping jacks, or wiggle around. Often, these movements will put them more at ease and encourage more natural expressions for photos!
- Wake up early. Most families have their morning routine nailed down by the end of the school year, and kids know exactly how much time they need to get dressed, eat, and head out the door (which often means there’s not much time to spare). Set your alarm 10-15 early on the last day of school to avoid the need to rush.
- Keep the lighting in mind. An essential tip for taking the best last day of school photos is to make sure your kids aren’t backlit, whether they’re standing in front of a window or out by the mailbox. Have them face the light source for brighter, clearer photos.
- Take a variety of shots. I suggest taking several different types of photos with your kids holding their last day of school sign. Make sure to get at least one close-up of them holding their sign, as well as full-length photos to show off their whole last day of school outfit.
- Consider the background. You’ll want to choose a backdrop for your last day of school photos that doesn’t distract from your adorable child. Avoid cluttered or overly busy backgrounds, and opt for an area with lots of open space behind them instead.
- Print the last day of school sign on durable white card stock. Card stock holds up better than regular printer paper, especially with how fidgety young kids can get! Card stock also looks better in photos, as it’s not as transparent as plain copy paper.
