Give cash in the most creative way with this Donut Box Money Gift! Dollar bills folded into donuts + cute printable signs = the best “dough-licious” cash gift idea ever.

“Dough-licious” Money Donut Gift Idea
Giving cash as a gift can feel a little…boring. You stuff some bills in a card, scrawl “Enjoy!” on the inside, and hand it over with a slightly apologetic smile. The recipient says, “Oh, you didn’t have to!” But what they mean is, “Why is this just taped to a card?”
Well, not anymore. Say hello to the Donut Box Money Gift – a ridiculously fun, totally punny, and surprisingly easy way to give cash that will have everyone at the party absolutely losing it. (In the best possible way.)
If you love this kind of creative cash gifting as much as I do, you’ll also want to check out my super popular Pizza Box Money Gift and my Money Lei – both are huge hits and total crowd-pleasers. But today, we’re talking donuts. And dough. And dollar bills folded into the most adorable little donut shapes you’ve ever seen. Let’s do this!
Why This Money Gift Is So Great

Here’s the thing about cash as a gift: everyone loves it. Teenagers, graduates, teachers, newlyweds, coworkers – nobody has ever been sad to receive money. The only problem is that handing over a stack of bills feels impersonal. This donut money box gift solves that problem.
It’s cute. It’s punny. It takes just a little bit of effort – enough to show you actually care – but it’s not so complicated that you’ll spend an entire weekend making it. And when the lucky recipient opens that Dunkin’ box and sees a half-dozen “donuts” made entirely of dollar bills? Pure magic.
This gift is perfect for:
- Birthdays (especially for the person who “has everything”)
- Graduation gifts
- Teacher appreciation
- A fun office gift exchange
- Holidays like Christmas
- Any time you just want to give cash without being boring about it
What You’ll Need
Here’s the great news – the supplies list is short and sweet (just like a donut!):
- A Dunkin’ Donuts 6-count donut box – Just pop into your local Dunkin’ and ask for an empty box! Or do like I did and order 6 donuts. You’ll have a snack while you’re making this adorable gift. Krispy Kreme boxes should work well also.
- Dollar bills – You’ll need about 8-10 bills per “donut,” so plan accordingly based on how many donuts you want to fill the box. Mix denominations to control your total gift amount!
- The Donut Box Money Gift Printable Signs – These are the magic ingredient that makes the whole thing come together! The cute printable signs include sayings like “The best part of the donut is the dough” and “This is dough-licious”. They tape right onto the outside of the box for maximum punny impact.
- Scissors
- Tape (regular scotch tape works great)
- A color printer (or you can send the file to your local print shop or office supply print center)
- White cardstock – Printing on cardstock gives your signs a much nicer, more polished look than regular printer paper. Totally worth it!
How to Make the Donut Box Money Gift
Ready to get crafting? I promise this is easier than it looks. Here’s how to put it all together:
Step 1: Print and Cut Your Signs
Print the Donut Box Money Gift Printable Signs on white cardstock. Grab your scissors and cut out each sign along the edges, or use a paper trimmer if you have one. You’ll have signs for the top of the box and fun sayings for the sides – things like “This is dough-licious” that will make everyone smile (and groan) when they see it.
Step 2: Tape the Signs to the Box

Tape the signs onto the outside and inside lid of the box. The main sign goes on the top of the box, and the side signs wrap around – use a little tape at the corners to keep everything nice and secure.
Step 3: Fold Your Dollar Bill “Donuts”
This is the fun part! Take your dollar bills and fold them into donut shapes. Here’s the basic method:

- Fold the top corners of the bill to the center – First lay the bill out horizontally. Fold in half, creasing well, and then unfold. The center crease will be your guide. Next, fold the top-right corner down so its edge aligns with the center crease. Repeat on the top-left side. You should have a triangular point at the top. (This is very similar to the first step in folding a paper airplane.)
- Fold the angled edges to the center again – Take the right slanted edge and fold it down to meet the center crease. Do the same on the left. The nose will become a sharper, narrower point.
- Fold the bottom two tail pieces up – Flip the bill over to the opposite side. Fold the right part of the “tail” upward so that it is in line with the horizontal edge of the dollar bill. Do the same on the left side. You now have a smaller triangle shape.
- Fold the pointed tip down and fold in half – Fold the sharp pointy tip down so that it meets the bottom edge of the triangle. Then fold the whole thing in half so that the pointed tip is inward. On the straight edge of the folded bill, you should have two small pockets. This is where you will insert the next folded bill.
- Repeat and attach the bills together – Repeat steps 1-4 until you have 8-10 folded bills. Then, attach them together in a circular shape (like a donut). Insert the two pointy ends of one folded bill into the two back pockets of another folded bill. Continue attaching 8-10 folded bills together, and close the circle by inserting the points of the first bill into the pockets of the last.
Tip: Crisp, newer bills fold much more easily and look nicer in the finished gift. Consider grabbing fresh bills from the bank ahead of time!
Step 4: Fill the Box
Place your finished dollar bill “donuts” in the box, arranged just like real donuts. To give my donuts some height and make them look more 3-D, I cut an empty cardboard toilet paper roll into thirds. Then, I taped each dollar bill donut to the top. Use another small piece of tape to secure the toilet paper roll to the bottom of the box. That way your donuts don’t get tossed in transit.
Step 5: Close It Up and Gift It!
Close up the box, add a ribbon or bow on top if you’d like a little extra flair, and you’re done! Hand it over and get ready for the reaction. (Fair warning: you will absolutely be asked to make more of these.)

Tips for Making It Extra Special
- Mix bill denominations! Use a mix of $1s, $5s, and $10s to hit your desired total while keeping the gift looking full and generous.
- Add a personal note. Tuck a little card inside the box with a heartfelt message – or lean into the puns and write something like “I ‘donut’ know what I’d do without you!”
- Print extras. The side signs are so cute — consider printing a couple extra copies to use as gift tags or decorations on the outside of a gift bag if you’re using one.
- Add some color. Add some brightly colored confetti or paper shreds to the bottom of the donut box before adding the money donuts. This really spruces up the presentation and adds to the whimsy of this cash gift idea!
