Looking for ways to color Easter Eggs without using dye? These pretty DIY glitter Easter eggs are so easy to make with a few simple supplies and NO egg dye!
I must admit, I’m a little bit of a neat-freak. So the idea of dying Easter eggs with my kids makes me squirm. Knocking over cups of colored dye and staining our front porch or dining chairs is not my idea of a fun family activity.
So this year we decided to try a new and creative way to color Easter eggs – with glitter! And since my sparkle-loving, girly daughters are all about the bling, they absolutely LOVED how these glittered eggs turned out!
If you’re looking for creative ways to decorate and color your hard-boiled eggs this year, and you also want to avoid any random egg dye stains or the dreaded vinegar smell, then give these fun DIY glittered eggs a try!
Supplies for DIY Glitter Easter Eggs
The great thing about this easy Easter project is that you probably already have most of the supplies on hand in your craft closet! Here are the supplies you need:
- Boiled Eggs – Or you could also use plastic craft eggs if you prefer.
- Fine Glitter – You can use chunky glitter for a different look, but I have found that the finer glitter consistency sticks to the eggs better.
- Elmer’s Glue – Good old classic school glue works best for these DIY Easter Eggs.
- Paint Brush
- Quart-sized Ziploc Bags
- Hairspray (optional) – You don’t technically have to use hairspray, but it does help the glitter stay in place on the eggs.
How to Make Glitter Easter Eggs
Just follow these simple steps to color Easter eggs with glitter instead of colored dye:
- Add a bit of Elmer’s school glue or other white craft glue to small bowl. The amount of glue needed will vary based on how many eggs you are glittering, but about 1/4 cup should be good to start with. Add about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of one color of glitter to a quart-sized zip top bag. Add the other glitter colors to their own bags, and do not mix the colors.
- Dip the paint brush in the glue and brush each hard-boiled egg with glue until it is completely covered.
- Place the glue-covered egg in one of the glitter bags and roll it around. Try not to scrape the egg against the sides of the bag too much. Once the egg is covered, let it sit in the bag for about 2-3 minutes for the glue and glitter to dry slightly.
- Carefully remove the glittered egg from the bag. If there are any bare spots, just brush on more glue and place the egg back in the bag to completely cover those spots.
Craft Tips:
- Make sure your hard-boiled eggs are completely cool and dry before applying the glue.
- Use an inexpensive, fine-mist aerosol hair spray to keep the glitter in place. Just spray a thin layer of the hair spray all over the glittered eggs and transfer to a wire rack for the spray to dry.
- For best results, paint on a thin even layer of glue. If you use too much glue, then you’ll have a gloopy mess.
- Use fine glitter for the best coverage. Thicker chunky glitter will not cover the eggs as well, and I prefer the pretty diamond-like sparkle of the finer glitter consistency.
- I highly recommend this Ziploc bag method – I tried to make glitter eggs by just sprinkling the glitter on top, and it was so much messier. The zip top bag keeps the glitter from going everywhere!
