These free printable back to school gift tags are the perfect way to say “Happy First Day of School”! Whether you’re a mom trying to check “class gifts” off your back to school list, or a teacher wanting to send your students off with something small on day one, these tags make it simple!

These free school gift tags are the easiest way to send your kids to school with a little something for their classmates (or to whip up a quick teacher gift too)! With their retro, colorful design, these tags are just plain fun, and they print 9 to a page so you can knock out a whole class list in one go.
If you’re in full back to school prep mode right now, you’re in the right place! Be sure to check out my other back to school printables and ideas for more ways to make this time of year easier on you (and more fun for your kids).
Why You’ll Love these Gift Tags
- Retro, cheerful design – bright colors and cute school-themed graphics (apples, rainbows, school buses, globes, and more) that kids will love
- 9 tags per page – no wasted paper, and less printing for you
- Budget-friendly – pair with a small snack or school supply item for an inexpensive gift that still feels special
- Versatile – works for classmate gifts and teacher gifts (more on that below!)

Supplies You’ll Need
Grabbing this printable is free, but here’s what you’ll want to have on hand to put the tags together:
- White cardstock (65 lb weight) – cardstock holds up much better than regular printer paper and gives the tags a sturdier, more finished look
- Printer – any home printer that can handle cardstock will work
- Paper trimmer – for nice, straight edges when cutting the tags apart (a paper trimmer is so much faster than scissors when you’re cutting out multiple tags!)
- Hole punch – to punch a hole in the corner of each tag for attaching it to your gift
- Curling ribbon, twine, or string – to tie the tag onto your gift bag or item
- Small gift bags or clear treat bags – to hold whatever goodie you’re attaching the tag to
How to Assemble Your First Day of School Gift Tags

- Download and print the gift tags on white cardstock.
- Use your paper trimmer to cut the tags apart along the dotted lines.
- Punch a hole in the corner of each tag.
- Thread ribbon or twine through the hole and tie the tag onto your gift.
- Hand out to classmates, teachers, or keep a few on hand for last-minute gifts!
Ideas for Using These First Day of School Gift Tags
The best part about these tags is how many ways you can use them! Here are some of my favorite ideas:
For classmates:
- A small bag of goldfish crackers or another individually packaged snack
- A mini pack of crayons
- A small bag of basic school supplies like a 50 cent pack of crayons, a glue stick, and a bottle of school glue
- A fun eraser or pencil topper
For teachers:
- Attach the tag to a bottle of hand sanitizer or a candle
- Tie it onto a gift card holder for coffee or a local restaurant
- Pair it with a small bouquet of flowers for the first day
- Add it to a “teacher survival kit” style basket filled with classroom supplies
- Use it on a bag of their favorite candy or treat
These tags really do double duty – swap out what’s attached and they work for practically any first day of school gift you want to put together!
