Ingredients for Flag Taco Dip
This recipe calls for simple ingredients that come together to create a delicious appetizer. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Refried beans: The base of the dip which makes for a hearty and flavorful foundation.
- Sour cream, cream cheese, and taco seasoning: These ingredients create a creamy, tangy layer with a kick of taco spice. Lighten it up with low fat sour cream and cream cheese or go for the full-fat versions for a a decadent flavor.
- Salsa: Use your favorite salsa for this recipe. You can go for a mild chunky salsa, a spicier restaurant-style salsa, or even salsa verde!
- Mexican cheese: I love to use the Mexican cheese blend, but you can use any shredded cheese you prefer. Cheddar cheese, pepper jack, or monterrey jack would all be delicious in this taco flag dip.
- Scallions: Green onions provide a pop of freshness and color.
- Diced Roma tomatoes: Rows of tomatoes will form the red stripes on the flag pattern. Use cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes if you prefer.
- Shredded white cheese: This will form the white stripes of the flag design, so be sure to go for a white cheese here. Monterrey Jack or mozzarella cheese work perfectly.
- Blue corn tortilla chips: Blue tortilla chips will be broken or crushed to form the blue square on the iconic flag design.
- Sliced white cheese: You’ll only need one slice of mozzarella or provolone for the stars on top of the dip.
How to Make Flag Taco Dip
Creating this impressive American Flag Taco Dip is easier than you might think! Just follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Layer the Dip
In the bottom of a 13×9 inch dish, spread the refried beans out evenly. In a medium bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning mix until well mixed and layer on top of beans. Next, add the salsa layer on top of the sour cream layer, followed by the shredded Mexican blend cheese and scallions.
Tip: You can use any flavor of salsa you like and add green chiles to the refried beans for a pop of flavor.
Step 2: Create the Flag Topping
Use a small 1 ½ to 2-inch star cookie cutter to cut out 5 cheese stars from the Jack or mozzarella cheese slice. Add crushed tortilla chips to the upper lefthand corner of the dip, then place stars on top. Beginning and ending with the tomatoes, rotate rows of chopped tomatoes and shredded Monterey Jack cheese to form the stripes.
Tip: If you’re not a fan of tomatoes, feel free to use red bell pepper for the red stripes in the flag design.
