These mini candy tackle box gifts make the perfect party favors for kids’ birthdays! Fill with you choice of small, brightly colored candies, tie on a ribbon and the free printable gift tags, and you’ve got a great gift to says “Thanks”!

On vacation recently, I wandered into a Dylan’s Candy Bar store and I was fascinated at the adorable plastic candy tackle box gifts that they had. Each little compartment was filled with a different type of rainbow-colored candy, and the boxes opened for easy picking of your favorites. Kind of like the popular “snackle box” but for your sweet tooth!
I immediately thought that the mini candy tackle box would make a perfect birthday gift or a sweet pick-me-up to send to a friend. After all, I love gifting sweet treats (like this candy bar birthday poster) to people that are hard to buy for.
But after searching online for plastic compartmented tackle boxes, I discovered that you can buy the most adorable mini versions – great for filling with beads, screws, and your favorite small candy! And my mind turned to my daughter’s upcoming birthday party.
I found some mini plastic tackle boxes on Amazon for a good price, and I headed to raid the candy aisle at Walgreens for all of the brightly colored sweet treats that I could find. A bit of coordinating ribbon and cute printable gift tags, and I had the perfect birthday party favors for a kids’ birthday shindig!

Rainbow-Colored Candy for Mini Tackle Box Gifts
If you want to replicate my candy box idea, then you’ll need a good variety of brightly colored candy. I suggest heading to your local grocery or drug store to see what types of candy will fit in your chosen plastic compartment boxes. Look for small candies that come loose in the package, like Skittles or M&M’s.
Here are the types of candy that I purchased to make my cute “Thanks for Coming” party favors, as well as some others that will work for these gifts:
- Skittles – I used a combination of the classic flavors and the berry variety. The regular packs don’t include blue candy, so keep that in mind.
- M&M’s
- Mike and Ike – These come in different varieties with different color options. I used the movie theater boxes that I found at Walgreens.
- Gummy bears – The Albanese brand have nice, bright colors (and they’re our kids’ favorite gummy bears).
- Dots
- Spree
- Sweetarts
- Sour Patch Kids – I had to buy these because I ran out of blue candy for my blue-themed tackle box.
- Starburst
- Swedish fish – Perfect for a red candy tackle box, or grab the pack with a variety of colors.
- Peach gummy rings – If your kids LOVE these peach rings like mine do, then be sure to check out these adorable peach gummy Valentines!
- Jelly beans – If you have access to a Jelly Belly store and you can find the packs that come in one solid color, that would be best.
Making the Mini Candy Tackle Boxes
I enlisted my oldest daughter to help me separate out all of the different candies by color and fill the boxes. This is a great job for kids to help with, and you can even get some learning and color recognition in with your younger kiddos. We started by dumping out all of the candy pieces to see how many of each color we had and to plot where the different candies would go in the boxes.
*TIP – I recommend dumping the candy on a large sheet tray or plate, because the sides will help contain your round-shaped candies so they don’t roll off your table.
Once we had a plan for how to fill the boxes, we simply filled each up with a different color of candy. These are the plastic mini tackle boxes that we used for the monochromatic favors like this yellow one (and the solid blue candy box pictured farther down):
These smaller boxes are a great size for toddlers or younger kids, and they’re also the perfect size for birthday party favors. Plus, the boxes feel sturdy since the dividers are fixed in place, and you get 4 boxes in a pack for a decent price.
We used these slightly larger compartment boxes for the multi-color rainbow candy box (pictured at the beginning of this post). These would probably be too large for party favors, but they would make awesome teacher candy gift ideas or small gifts for neighbors or friends. These boxes come in a pack of 6.
I tied one of my multi-color “Thanks” gift tags on to the rainbow box of candy, but you could also use the free printable gift tags for other thank you gifts as well. The possibilities are endless!
The Perfect Candy Gift or Party Favor
After making lots of different candy gift boxes in a multitude of colors, it got me thinking about other holidays and gift-giving occasions that I could use these small gifts for… because I just can’t resist a color-coordinated or themed gift with a cute printable gift tag! Here are some of the ideas that I came up with for gifting these candy-filled plastic boxes:
- baby shower party favors – Use the blue gift tags and create candy tackle box favors with all blue candies for an awesome gift for your guests.
- thank you gifts for mail or package delivery people
- end of the school year gifts for friends – Just swap out the gift tags for a summer themed tag and attach to the box of candy.
- Christmas gifts for neighbors and coworkers – You could even fill the boxes with red and green candies. During the holiday season, you can usually find packages of red and green M&M’s and other candies.
- small employee appreciation gifts – Go all out and match the colors to your business’s logo!
- appreciation gifts for coaches
- Valentines for kids to pass out at school – Fill the compartments with red or pink candies, or a mixture of both! Then tie on a cute Valentine’s gift tag.
