DIY Valentine Candy Gram (Candy Poster)

Looking for a Valentine’s Day gift that’s creative, thoughtful, and guaranteed to make your husband, boyfriend, or kids smile? This Valentine’s Day Candy Gram is exactly what you need! It’s basically a giant candy bar poster made entirely out of candy puns – and honestly, what’s more romantic than that?

I’ve been making these candy bar posters for years (check out my birthday candy poster and Christmas candy bar poster for more inspiration!), and they’re always a huge hit. They look impressive and heartfelt, but the secret is they’re actually super easy to make. Plus, your guy gets a ton of his favorite candy, so it’s basically a win-win.

This poster is filled with adorable candy puns like “You’re my LIFESAVER” and “You’re the best in all the MILKY WAY” that spell out exactly how you feel – with the help of some strategically placed candy bars, of course. It’s fun to put together, totally customizable with your own coloring, and way more personal than just grabbing a box of chocolates at the store (although, let’s be real, there’s nothing wrong with that either – especially this money chocolate box gift).

Whether your Valentine has a major sweet tooth or you just want to do something a little different this year, this Valentine candy gram poster is the perfect DIY gift that shows you put in the effort while keeping things fun and lighthearted.

Supplies Needed

Here’s everything you’ll need to create your Valentine’s Day candy bar poster:

  • printable Valentine’s Day Candy Bar Poster – Sized for 24″ x 36″ poster board. Available in my shop here!
  • 36″ x 48″ tri-fold cardboard project board – Available at office supply stores, Target, or Walmart. I got mine from Walmart for about $5.00.
  • spray adhesive – I use this Krylon Spray Adhesive.
  • markers or crayons for coloring the black and white design – Lighter colors work best for this project, especially for coloring in the letters at the top.
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • all the candy bars and candy referenced on your poster – Like Payday, 100 Grand, Lifesavers, Milky Way, Snickers, Mounds, Almond Joy, and other candies. I recommend doing a quick read-through of your poster before heading to the store so you can make a shopping list!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Print the Candy Gram

Have your Valentine’s Day candy bar poster template printed at a local print shop or office supply store like Staples, FedEx Office, or Office Depot. You’ll need it to be printed at 24″ x 36″ as an architectural or engineering print with a vertical orientation – you don’t need anything fancy like cardstock since you’ll be mounting it to the poster board.

Below is a screenshot of what the print settings look like if you order online from FedEx Office – as you can see it costs about $5.00 for printing:

Step 2: Attach the Candy Gram to Your Board

Open up your tri-fold project board completely, and use scissors to cut off the two side panels. This will leave you with a 24″ x 36″ piece of poster board.

Then, spray the spray adhesive across the top quarter of the board, and place the top of the sign on top of the adhesive, positioning it so that it lines up with the top of the board.

I found it easiest to work in small sections like this – spray about 25% of the board, attach that part of the sign, smooth it down to avoid wrinkles or air bubbles, and then continue to move down until the full sign is glued in place.

*TIP – With the spray adhesive that I used, I was able to carefully pull up the sign and reposition it if I didn’t get it perfectly straight.  This is also why I recommend starting on one side and only gluing a portion of the sign on at a time.

Let the adhesive dry completely before moving on to the next step. If you notice the corners of the sign pulling away from the project board, you can also add a few pieces of folded over packing tape to the corners to hold the candy bar sign in place.

Step 3: Color the Poster

This is the fun part! Grab your markers, crayons, or colored pencils and get creative coloring in the design. You can stick with traditional Valentine’s colors like red and pink, or customize it however you’d like.

*TIP – Color in the wording at the top using a light colored marker like light pink, yellow, or light blue. The lighter colors look much better against the black outline.

Step 4: Attach the Candy

Now comes the most satisfying part – hot gluing all that candy! Heat up your hot glue gun and start attaching each candy bar and candy piece to its corresponding spot on the poster.

Work carefully so the candy covers the words on the poster that it’s replacing. For example, if the poster says “You’re a LIFESAVER,” you’ll glue an actual Lifesavers candy over the word “LIFESAVER.”

Take your time with this step and make sure everything is secure. You don’t want any candy falling off before the big reveal!

Notes

  • For the project board – Be sure that you use a 36″ x 48″ trifold cardboard project board. Available at office supply stores, Target, or Walmart. I got mine from Walmart for about $5.00.
  • For the Spree – These are the hardest candies to find. Check local gas stations first, and if you can’t find them, you can purchase the rolls of Sprees on Amazon.
  • For the candy bars – The PDF template is sized perfectly to fit the regular sizes of candy bars, NOT the King size or mini size.
