This Father’s Day candy poster is the perfect DIY gift to wish Dad a Happy Father’s Day! Just print out the large PDF, attach it to a foam core board or cardboard project board, and glue on the candy bars for a sweet gift!
Coming up with Father’s Day ideas is always a struggle. All of the fathers in my life, including my husband and my own Dad, seem to have everything they want already, and another shirt or tie just doesn’t stack up when compared to how special and amazing these Dads are!
So I decided to come up with my own fun DIY Father’s Day gift idea for the special day in the form of a candy bar poster!
There are a variety of candy bar poster gift ideas that you can make with different candies and for various occasions. Many of the DIY candy bar posters that you find online are made with poster board and a permanent marker. But to be honest, most of them look sloppy because they’re handwritten and not very neat.
So I decided to make my own Father’s Day candy poster with a printable sign that can be colored and glued to a project board. And I couldn’t be happier with how this sweet gift turned out!
Here’s how to make this amazing candy bar poster for Dad:
Supplies Needed to Make this Candy Bar Poster
You will need a large project board, the printable 24″ x 36″ sign, and of course, LOTS of candy! Here’s a look at the specific supplies that you need to make this Father’s Day candy poster:
Foam Core Board or Tri-Fold Project Board
You have a few different options for the base of the candy poster. Because of the weight of the candy bars, I suggest that you go with a thicker board as the base, like a foam board or a tri-fold cardboard project board, rather than a plain poster board.
To keep the costs of this Father’s Day gift down, I chose to use a cardboard tri-fold board that I got from Walmart for about $3.50. The middle portion of the project board is the perfect 24″ x 36″ size, so I just used a pair of heavy duty scissors to cut down the two folds and remove the side portions.
The most common size for a foam board is 20″ x 30″, like the ones that you find at Dollar Tree and most grocery stores. To purchase a 24″ x 36″ foam board, you typically have to spend much more and buy a large pack of 10 boards. So I highly recommend the 3 panel project board that I used instead.
Candy Bars
To make a candy bar poster like mine, you will need the following candy, all in the regular sizes (NOT King Size):
- Spree – This was the most difficult candy to find. I suggest trying a convenience store or gas station first.
- Crunch
- Milky Way
- Snickers
- Smarties – The large roll that you can find at Dollar Tree and most gas stations.
- Almond Joy
- Mounds
- Nerds – You will need the regular size box of Nerds, not the movie theater box size.
- Lifesavers – You will need the roll of Lifesavers to fit on the board.
- 100 Grand
- Pay Day
- Watchamacallit
- Extra gum
Printable “Best Dad Ever” Candy Bar Poem
The printable candy poster sign available in my shop here includes the following candy bar poem with creative messages, perfect for Father’s Day or Dad’s birthday:
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
You will need a hot glue gun to attach the candy bars to the sign. I tried using pieces of folded over packing tape to attach the candy, but the weight of the candy bars was too heavy for the tape, and when I held up the candy bar poster, the candies shifted down and eventually fell off.
A hot glue gun is definitely the way to go for this DIY Father’s Day gift!
Spray Adhesive
I used Krylon Spray Adhesive to glue the printable candy bar poem to the cardboard base. You could use hot glue or a different adhesive if you wish, but I like the smooth even result that you get from a sprayable adhesive.
*TIP – If you find that the corners of the printable sign are pulling up in the corners after the spray adhesive has dried, then you can place a few pieces of folded over packing tape in the corners for extra support.
Markers or Crayons
This part is optional, but I used Crayola markers to color in the letters and border design of my Father’s Day candy card.
The actual candy bar poem prints out in black and white to save money, so you can either keep it black and white or add in some color like I did. This would also be a great way for your kids to get involved in the project!
Project Tips:
- PDF is black and white to save on printing costs, so you will need to color with markers to make it look like the photos.
- Color the “Best Dad Ever” letters with a lighter color marker like yellow, neon green, or light blue for best results.
- Use spray adhesive to glue the printable sign to the project board. Start at the top and attach about 1/3 of the sign at a time until done. Smooth as you go.
- Hot glue candy in place.
- Only use regular size candy, NOT King Size or theater boxes. The outline boxes on the sign are the perfect size for the candy.
- I used a trifold project board that I found at Walmart for about $3.75. I cut off the two side panels, and I was left with the middle piece which measures 24″ x 36″, the perfect size base.
How to Make this Father’s Day Candy Poster
Step 1: Print the Father’s Day candy poster sign.
The printable sign is sized at 24″ x 36″ to fit a large number of candies and the cute poem. And obviously, you can’t print a PDF that large at home.
So I suggest printing the file as an architectural blueprint at FedEx Kinko’s or an office supply store. I had my candy sign printed at FedEx Kinko’s for about $4.75 plus tax.
You can upload the file on their website to place your order, and then pick it up from the store when it’s done. It’s a very easy process, and I have had multiple items printed as architectural prints – like my favorite giant wall calendar!
Here’s a screenshot of the correct settings for ordering the 24″ x 36″ print from FedEx Kinko’s:

Step 2: Glue or tape the candy poem to the sign base.
Next, attach the printable candy bar sign to the cardboard base. If you’re using the same trifold cardboard project base as I did, then you will need to cut the two side panels off first so that you have a perfect 24″ x 36″ piece of white cardboard.
Then, spray the spray adhesive across the top quarter of the board, and place the top of the sign on top of the adhesive, positioning it so that it lines up with the top of the board. I found it easiest to work in small sections like this – spray about 25% of the board, attach that part of the sign, and then continue to move down until the full sign is glued in place.
*TIP – With the spray adhesive that I used, I was able to carefully pull up the sign and reposition it if I didn’t get it perfectly straight. This is also why I recommend starting on one side and only gluing a portion of the sign on at a time.
Then, allow the adhesive to dry for at least an hour. If you notice the corners of the sign pulling away from the project board, you can also add a few pieces of folded over packing tape to the corners to hold the candy bar sign in place. This is what I did, and it worked great!
Step 3: Color your Father’s Day candy poster.
The printable Father’s Day candy bar poster comes in black and white to save on printing costs, so I suggest that you color in the “Best Dad Ever” letters and some of the border design with markers or colored pencils.
*TIP – To make your letters stand out at the top of the sign, choose a lighter color like yellow, neon green, or light blue. The lighter colors will look better against the black outline of the letters.
Step 4: Glue the candy bars to the poster.
The last step is to glue the candy bars to the poster. Working one candy at a time, apply hot glue to the back of the candy bar and place it on the sign in the correct position. Allow the hot glue to dry fully before moving the sign.
And then your awesome Father’s Day candy poster is done! This is the perfect gift for the Dad with a sweet tooth, and it looks so much cooler than the handwritten DIY candy bar posters!
