Supplies Needed
- free printable gingerbread house craft templates – There’s so many cute windows, doors, and decorations to color and cut for your house! Grab the template at the end of this post!
- white card stock – I recommend printing on card stock because your house and decorations will be sturdier.
- crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- scissors
- glue stick or white school glue – I recommend using glue sticks for this craft because some of the house decorations are small, so the glue stick will be less messy.
- glitter, pom poms, sequins, or other decorations – Totally optional, but you can use these to “fancy up” your cute gingerbread crafts.
How to Make the Gingerbread House Crafts
These cut and paste Christmas crafts are so easy to make, but here’s a look at the process that we used:
Step 1: Print and color the gingerbread house craft templates.
Print out the gingerbread house base page and the decorations pages on white card stock or printer paper. There are pages for different door designs, windows, chimneys, trees, and other decorations!
*TIP – Change the settings in the Print window to “Print to Fit Paper”, that way the full design prints on the page.
My kids used a combination of crayons and fine tip markers to color their house templates. I love the finished look with the different types of coloring tools – so creative!
Step 2: Cut out the templates.
Next, cut out the individual pieces along the outer lines. This step is great for hand-eye coordination and scissor practice, but for younger kids, you may need to help.
For the main house template, you can either cut that out or leave it as a whole sheet and just glue the decorations to the full page. My kids did it both ways, and this cute Christmas craft turned out great either way!
Step 3: Glue the decorations to the gingerbread house.
Next, it’s time to assemble your cute Christmas crafts! Lay out the main house piece and start attaching the smaller elements like doors, windows, and decorations. Use glue sticks for minimal mess and maximum control.
Encourage your kids to add their decorations in layers:
- Attach structural elements like doors and windows.
- Add decorative touches like candy canes, gumdrops, and wreaths.
- Finish with accessories like trees, snowmen, or a little chimney.
*TIP – If your kids want to create a 3D effect, show them how to fold tabs or stack decorations slightly above the surface. You could also use 3D mounting squares (found in most craft stores) to attach different pieces and give them a fun 3D effect!
And your finished gingerbread house crafts should look something like this:
Craft Tips:
- Use a sturdy base paper – You can use a piece of colored card stock or construction paper and glue your house to that as a backer board of sorts.
- Color first, then cut – It’s easier for kids to color the smaller decoration pieces if they’re on the full sheet of paper.
- Glue sticks are best – They dry instantly, and WAY less messy for gluing the smaller house pieces in place!
- Add fun embellishments – Make your Christmas crafts even more jolly by adding glitter, sequins, small pom poms, or other glitzy accents!
- Print to fit – Change the printer settings to “Fit to Printable Area” instead of “Print Actual Size”… This ensures the whole design fits on your printer paper.
