Tips for Doing an At-Home Scavenger Hunt
Planning a home scavenger hunt is super easy! Here are a few tips to help make it a success:
1. Print the at home scavenger hunt clues on card stock
I always print my scavenger hunt clues on card stock instead of regular printer paper. They’re much sturdier that way, and you can even laminate them and use them several times throughout the years. Plus, the clues sometimes stick to things when printed on paper, which you don’t have to worry about as much with card stock.
If you don’t have card stock handy, you could also use Post-it notes! Write each clue on a separate sticky note and just stick them to the corresponding location.
*TIP – To make your treasure hunt clues look old like a treasure map, tear them out instead of cutting them out with scissors. That’s what I did with the clue in the photo above!
2. Consider the age range when planning the home scavenger hunt
As you choose your scavenger hunt clues, think about the age of your participants. If you have younger kids, using fewer, simpler clues is a good idea. For older kids, you can use more challenging clues that get them thinking. Luckily, I’ve created 60 clues for you to choose from!
3. Discuss the at-home scavenger hunt rules
The beauty of this at-home scavenger hunt game is that you can decide the rules! They can be things like no running, working in teams or alone, or making sure they check off or collect cards/clues as they go. Talk about the rules with your kids before the game starts so everyone is on the same page.
4. Set a time limit for the home scavenger hunt
The beauty of this game is that it can keep your kids entertained for a while, but you don’t want it to drag on forever. This can get frustrating, especially for younger kids. Depending on age, I suggest setting a time limit of 30-45 minutes.
5. Have a prize at the end
You don’t have to spend a dime on your at-home scavenger hunt prizes! The prize at the end could be a yummy snack everyone will love, a homemade coupon for some extra screen time, or even a fun activity you can all do together.
