These printable pencil Valentines cards are perfect for kids to pass out at school this year! Just print, cut, and add some brightly colored pencils for easy, non-candy Valentines for classmates!
I don’t know about your school district, but Valentine’s Day at my kids’ school is getting more and more restrictive. You can’t bring in homemade treats like cupcakes. The treats have to be allergy-friendly and gluten-free. And actually, they prefer no sugary sweets like cookies or candy. Healthy foods only.
So it seems like every year I’m racking my brain to come up with cute and creative Valentines for my kids to pass out to their classmates – that still fit into the guidelines of their schools.
To fit with the non-candy Valentines requirements this year, I made these adorable printable pencil valentines cards… but instead of just including a plain pencil that has to be sharpened, I upped the “wow” factor and attached not one, but two, colorful mechanical pencils!
And because I’m all about the good Valentine’s Day puns, I included a funny sentiment on the cards – #2 Pencils for a #1 Friend! Yes, my kids think I’m cheesy, but I know their friends love it! *For another fun Valentine idea, be sure to check out these mac and cheese Valentines!
Here’s how to make these super simple DIY pencil valentines with the printable cards:
Supplies Needed
To make the super cute pencil Valentines like mine, you will need these supplies:
- white card stock – You should print the PDF on white card stock so that the Valentines don’t get wrinkled or torn in your child’s backpack. I prefer to use 80 lb card stock, because it is nice and sturdy and it also goes through my home printer.
- paper trimmer or scissors – I prefer to use a paper trimmer for projects like this, because the cards will be nice and straight, and I can make a bunch of Valentines easily. If you don’t have a craft paper trimmer, you can absolutely cut the cards out by hand instead.
- craft knife – Like an Xacto knife… This makes it super easy to cut a slit in the cards. You can substitute a pair of sharp scissors if needed.
- pencils – To insert into the Valentines cards. I chose to use two mechanical pencils (because my daughters love them!), but you can add regular pencils instead. To make your pencil valentines extra festive, I recommend brightly colored or heart-themed pencils.
- printable pencil Valentine cards – Available in my shop!
- tape (optional) – You can place a small piece of tape on the back side of the Valentine cards to hold the pencils in place if needed. Since I used mechanical pencils that had a clip on the outside, I didn’t need to tape them in place.
How to Make the Pencil Valentines Cards
These printable Valentines cards are some of the easiest DIY Valentines that I’ve ever made for my kids! Just follow these steps:
- Print the PDF on white card stock.
- Use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut the cards out along the outer colored border.
- Use an Xacto knife to cut a slit about 1.5″ long at the top and bottom of the card. *I recommend adding the slit in the middle of the white stripes that are on the top and bottom. This is the perfect placement to be able to add one or two pencils and not have the card rip or tear. See photos.
- Have your kids fill in the “from” space with their names.
- Slide one or two pencils into the top and bottom slits.
And then your adorable DIY non-candy Valentines are done and ready to distribute at school!
